Wondering how to keep your voice healthy this holiday season? Generally, what's good for your body is good for your voice, but I've got some insider tips and tricks to help you preserve your voice at those noisy parts and survive the cold, dry, winter air. This is the story of how I completely FELL APART as a singer and the tools, strategies, and WHY behind my decision to move forward and rebuild. If you are plagued by fears of self doubt, worries that you are not good enough, or the concern that you simply just don't have what it takes to be a singer, don't let your inner critic (or the real life ones around you) stop you! Singing is a learned skill, so if you have a desire to sing, you CAN, you SHOULD, and you owe it to yourself! You can become a confident and skilled singer! Learn how to belt the high notes in Shallow like Lady Gaga. You just need a couple of singing tips to get you there. In this video, I'll show you: 1. How to use the muscles of your pelvis (aka proper breath support) for a high belt sound 2. Different vowel modifications to make belting those high notes easier. What the heck is breath support anyway? It ain't just about singing from your diaphragm, that's for sure. You have to use your whole core! In this video I'll teach you what breath support actually is (hint: it has to do with the way we move air from the lungs to the throat) and show you my FAVORITE breathing for singing exercise so you can feel the concept of breath support for singing at work in your body. When you learn how to breathe better for singing, you will eliminate strain, sing higher, improve vocal stamina, and just generally find greater ease in your singing. Struggling to find singing videos that teach you how to sing in a way you can actually understand? In this video, we'll talk about WHY you're struggling. I'm out there with ya'll on social and I generally see two types of singing videos: 1. SUPER science and anatomy driven singing videos that are freaking COOL, but leave me confused as to whether or not I'm doin' the thang they're telling me to do. 2. Really flowery videos that paint pretty pictures about what I want to feel in my body, but again I'm left feeling like WHAT??? I want to eliminate the confusion and get straight to it. We need a COMBINATION of approaches in order to fully understand how to sing. Ya definitely need the head knowledge (aka the science). But you also need tangible ways to feel it in your body. AND you need language (aka normal human speak) that talks DIRECTLY about the way you are experiencing the technique. What on EARTH does breath support actually mean!!!??? It can be a bit complicated (though it doesn't have to be), but step one is understanding air flow. High notes need faster airflow which requires a bit of resistance...AKA support. Check out this video to learn about fast vs. slow air and how to resist or support the air flow! If you're trying to do this whole sangin' thing on your own or just want more effective practice sessions, there are a few key things that can set you up for success. 1. TRUST your instincts. If it feels good, it probably is good. 2. Put your BRAIN in your BODY. It's not just about listening. You gotta FEEL what you fell. 3. Describe IN DETAIL what you feel in your body. This will give you clues about what is going on and how to either make positive changes or recreate the experience. You got this. The key is to pay attention and trust yourself! Are you trying to learn how to sing from online videos? These are my TOP singing tips for anyone trying to learn how to sing online. The biggest challenge with online singing tutorials is the lack of feedback from an instructor. But you can teach yourself to sing and get your own feedback with these easy checks: 1. Get a mirror! You will learn SO MUCH from just seeing yourself sing. 2. Watch for excessive tension in your body, especially from the neck up. 3. Check your posture. Nothin fancy here, just don't slouch. 4. STAND UP. Singing is athletic. Sitting is not an athletic posture. Singing doesn't have to be hard, scary, or overly complicated. There is SO MUCH you can do with zero guesswork to improve, especially when it comes to hitting those high notes. This is going to sound STUPID simple, but I'm tellin' ya, it works. If you're trying to hit a high note and struggling, ask yourself, am I giving it all my volume? If not, sing it LOUDER. That's it. It is WAY easier to sing a high note loudly than softly. |
