My own journey as a singer was one of sweat, blood, and tears. Lots and lots of tears if I'm being honest. The often very analytical process of learning new vocal techniques combined with high levels of performance anxiety left me feeling paralyzed and unable to sing. Enter yoga. But not just any yoga, yoga designed SPECIFICALLY for singers. These targeted exercises improved my vocal technique by making it a lived and felt experience. Areas of unwanted tension finally began to let go and my breath and my voice began operating in a new way...a way that I could TRUST.
Since then my journey and exploration into the use of yoga for singers has become a huge part of the way I approach my own singing and the way that I teach. The right yoga pose or breathing practice often feels like some kind of magic trickthat suddenly frees up the voice. But the thing is, it isn't magic. It's simply an approach that considers the WHOLE HUMAN when thinking about the way we sing. These videos are a true labor of love. They are a synthesis of every book I have read, every class I have taken, every teacher with whom I have studied, and a few sparks of my own imagination.
